Day 2 July 8 2015 - Biriatou to Olhette

July 8 2015

Leaving Biriatou, a meandering walk led us to a high opening. There we could see Hendaye by the glistening ocean on one side while the other side was the boundless green hills veiled behind the morning mist and fog. Purple and yellow flowers decorated our path. It was an easy walk to the border village of Ibardin.  To our surprise, we came across a shopping town with supermarket, sports shops, restaurants and inns. The best deal was to buy fresh fruit there; they were cheap and delicious. Locally produced ham at the supermarket was really enticing; and I had no qualms to devour some since I can justify it now- I am hiking the GR10! I read about the story of Basque ham and it certainly lived up to its reputation! Continuing on we gained more elevation and soon were at the foot hill of La Rhune. By then, the fog dissipated and La Rhune revealed its majestic summit.
